David Suchet made his stage debut at the age of five as an oyster in "Alice Through the Looking Glass". He often visited the theatre with his mother, an actress, who took him to her shows. David liked it very much but planned to become a doctor like his father. David was going to enter medical college but failed in physics. He decided to become an actor.

At the age of 18 he entered London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After graduating, he joined the Gateway Theatre in Chester as an assistant stage manager and actor. Directors made a note of the gifted, original-looking young actor but he didn't become a star. In the 1970 s, Suchet worked at Moss Brothers, a well known English clothier, selling their formal wear. He said in one of the interviews: "Moss Brothers offered me an apprenticeship as an junior manager. The morning that I had finally decided to accept, I got a call offering me a part in The Protectors with Robert Vaughn and Nyree Down Porter, shooting in Venice. Can you imagine it--one day I was working at Moss Brothers and the next I was on a plane heading for Venice."

On stage Suchet has performed in almost all the plays by Shakespeare. At the age of 23 he set a record of having been the youngest Shylock ever played on stage.

He often works for TV, film and radio, but theatre is still the biggest part of his career. At the end of 1999 he made his Broadway debut as Salieri in "Amadeus." Other stage roles include George in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", Iago in Othello, Timon of Athens, the professor in "Oleanna" and so on. He's won various awards and nominations for his stage roles, most recently a Tony nomination for best actor in "Amadeus in 2000.
