"Amadeus," a Broadway revival of Peter Shaffer s hit play popular more than twenty years ago, starred David Suchet in the role of court composer Antonio Salieri in a successful two-year run that started in London in 1998. A film adaptation starred F. Murray Abraham as Salieri and Tom Hulce as Mozart, winning five Academy Awards in 1985.

WHAT IS "AMADEUS" ABOUT?

"Amadeus" asserts that the real-life 18th century composer Antonio Salieri, a middle-aged man of average talent, drove the young genius, Mozart, to his death in 1791. Consumed with envy and rage because God had apparently chosen Mozart to be the instrument of God s grace and not himself, Salieri artfully nudges the young man into poverty, illness, and eventually to a pauper s grave, hoping to push Mozart s music into obscurity and secure his own place in music history. Itmight be considered a larger adaptation of Alexander Pushkin's "Mozart and Salieri" (1830).

Suchet regarded Salieri not as a two-dimensional villain but as a suffering human being. He said this about his interpretation of Salieri: "He never asks for forgiveness. He asks for understanding. If you understand him, you won't sympathize with him, but you have a deeper appreciation of why he did what he did. A large amount of research preceded Suchet's performance. He visited Legnano, a small town where Salieri was born and then traveled to Vienna, following Salieri s career path from Italy to Austria.

WHO WORKED ON "AMADEUS?

The other protagonist of the play was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, played by the young Michael Sheen in the 1998-2000 revival. Sheen was born in London where he still resides. He has performed in the best London theaters and has won several awards, winning international acclaim as the young composer. Other actors in the Broadway cast were Cindy Katz (Constanze), Michael Keenan (Baron Von Swieten), and J. P. Linton (Count Johann Von Strack). Peter Hall directed, and playwright Peter Shaffer produced the revival as well as the original twenty years ago.

"Amadeus" started its run in London at the National Theatre then moved to the Old Vic where it ran for over a year. The show then moved to Los Angeles for a few months before moving to Broadway in December 1999 at the Music Box Theater in New York. The show closed in May, 2000 after 165 performances. It was a Broadway debut for both Michael Sheen and David Suchet. It was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2000: David Suchet for the best performance by a leading actor and Peter Hall for the best revival of a play. It was also nominated for a Drama League Award (best performance). It was nominated eight times for Outer Critics Awards (outstanding revival of a play, outstanding actor in a play: David Suchet and Michael Sheen), outstanding featured actress in a play (Cindy Katz), outstanding director of a play (Peter Hall), outstanding scenic design (William Dudley), outstanding costume design (William Dudley), and outstanding lighting design (Paul Constable).
